Campus to Campus: Walk or Bike from ND to IUSB on the East Bank Trail
The East Bank Trail is a paved pathway along the banks of the St. Joseph River. Maintained by South Bend Parks & Recreation, the trail provides a safe, convenient, and beautiful venue for walking or biking.
Bus
Transpo
South Bend Public Transportation Corporation (Transpo)'s extensive route system can get you just about anywhere you want to go in South Bend and Mishawaka. Transpo lines are free for Notre Dame students and their dependents with a valid ND ID. All buses are equipped with bike racks.
Transpo’s fixed route buses are equipped with ramps and are accessible to individuals who use a mobility device or cannot climb stairs, and Transpo provides paratransit service to those who cannot access their fixed route buses.
The following routes are of interest to Notre Dame Students:
Route 7: Route 7 connects you to South Bend and Mishawaka. Both inbound and outbound Route 7 buses stop at the Hesburgh Library circle taking you to South Street Station (inbound) and University Park Mall (outbound).
Route 17 (The SWEEP): During the academic year, the SWEEP services the campuses of Notre Dame and Saint Mary's with stops at Hesburgh Library Circle, DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, Eddy Street Commons, Saint Mary's, Inn at Saint Mary's, and University Village.
Regional and National Buses
Greyhound Lines provide service to more than 3,800 destinations across North America with a modern, environmentally friendly fleet. The South Bend Greyhound station is located at the South Bend Airport.

Zipcar
Zipcar is a car-sharing service available 24/7 to all students. The annual membership fee for ND affiliates is $35 and applicants receive $35 worth of free driving credit applied towards their first month of driving. Gas, 180 miles per day, insurance, reserved parking spots and roadside assistance are included. Cars can be reserved anywhere from an hour to four days,and rates start at $8 per hour and $66 per day (24 hours).
Car Rentals
"Offering discounts on both National Car Rental and Enterprise Rent-A-Car has been selected as the University’s preferred supplier for car rental services. Highlights of the contract include discounted rates, young renter concessions, status matching from competitor’s rewards programs, discount on GPS, reduced city surcharges, and discounted one-way rates." Two Amtrak routes have stops in South Bend:
Lake Shore Limited: Daily service between Chicago and New York City through South Bend, Cleveland, Buffalo, and Boston.
Capitol Limited: Daily service between Washington, DC and Chicago with stops in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Toledo, and South Bend.
Amtrak stations near Notre Dame: South Bend, IN (SOB) | Niles, MI (MLS) | Elkhart, IN (EKH)
South Shore Line
Daily train service between the South Bend Airport and Chicago's Millenium Park.
Airplane
South Bend Airport
United, Delta, and Allegiant Air operate multiple flights to and from the South Bend Airport daily. The Airport is a convenient 15-minute drive from Notre Dame's campus, and its small size makes it easy and expedient to navigate.
Chicago-Area Airports
Many travelers to and from South Bend choose to fly directly from O'Hare or Midway. Note that Chicago is located in the Central Time Zone (CST) and South Bend in Eastern Standard Time (EST) so plan your travel accordingly.
There is very limited bus service between Notre Dame and the Chicago Airports. Flying into South Bend is more expenive but much more convenient.
